Two days after what would have been John Coltrane’s 93rd birthday, one of the most gifted bassists who ever shared a stage with the jazz legend will lead a tribute concert to him at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Reggie Workman has been lauded for his versatility. A master of both hard bop and avant-garde jazz, Workman has played with a who’s who of jazz musicians such as Red Garland, Roy Haynes, Gigi Gryce, Yusef Lateef, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Mann and Art Blakey. For much of 1961, Workman was a member of the John Coltrane Quartet, where he played on several important recordings.
In addition to his storied musical career, Workman has taught at prestigious music schools, including the University of Michigan and the New School in New York City. He has been named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts for 2020.
Joining Workman for the concert will be saxophonist and flutist Rafael Statin; pianist Ian Finkelstein and drummer Alex White.
