Camp Africa
Empowering kids to explore, create, and connect with their heritage—shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
What is Camp Africa?
A Legacy of The Wright
Camp Africa has been a cornerstone of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History's youth education initiatives for over two decades. It was created in response to the lack of culturally specific programming for young learners, particularly regarding African and African American history, identity, and contributions. The camp emerged to fill this gap, offering an immersive and engaging educational experience that helps children build a strong sense of self and cultural pride.
An Interactive Learning Experience
Since its inception, Camp Africa has been dedicated to experiential learning, blending academic, historical, and cultural education with hands-on activities. Designed for children ages 7-12, the camp's curriculum integrates S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) while weaving in stories, traditions, and historical narratives from the African diaspora. Camp Africa uses a combination of exhibitions, field trips, themed lessons, and hands on activities to provide a safe environment to reach deeper levels of enrichment and understanding for the youth, while still maintaining the exuberance, joy, and fun of summer.

COMING SOON: Camp Africa 2025
Celebrating 60 YEARS
For six decades, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History has stood as a beacon of knowledge, culture, and community, preserving and sharing the powerful stories of African and African American history. As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, this year’s Camp Africa theme, Legacy, invites young minds to explore the impact of those who came before us and consider the mark they will leave for future generations.
What does the word Legacy mean?
Legacy is the impact of our ancestors—their dreams, struggles, and triumphs that shape our lives today. It is the history we carry and the future we build.
How does Legacy show up in our lives?
It is in the traditions we keep, the stories we tell, the lessons we learn, and the communities we uplift. It is in the museums that preserve our history, the music that moves us, the art that inspires us, and the innovations that push us forward.
How do we thank our ancestors?
We honor them by learning their stories, carrying forward their values, and striving to improve the world for those who come after us. At Camp Africa, campers will engage in hands-on activities, storytelling, creative arts, and historical explorations to deepen their understanding of Legacy and their role in shaping the future.
