Meet the Artists Behind the Double ID Exhibition

Anjel is a visual artist specializing in Neo-Pop art paintings of contemporary African dandies. Working from hand-picked photos of stylish young people, Anjel modifies their outfits by changing the colors and textures, altering the light sources to deepen the shadows, heightening the reflections, and contextualizes his striking Black subjects. 

New to Anjel’s recent body of work is his use of symbols from the Adinkra alphabet, which is a contemporary way of writing some of the languages spoken in Ghana and Ivory Coast. The Adinkra symbols represent sayings, proverbs, or concepts.

Greg Bailey attended the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, where he was awarded a BFA in painting in 2011. His work explores issues of race, history, and society, juxtaposing academic painting techniques and image-making conventions with irony.  

Bailey’s exhibitions have included the Jamaica 50th Anniversary Launch, Social Atrocities, the Jamaica Biennial 2014, and Explorations IV: Masculinities.

Stephen Bauman’s early exposure to art provided him with a strong foundation in design and drawing. It was the years he spent studying and later teaching at the Florence Academy of Art, which enabled him to make a tremendous leap as an artist. Once graduated, Bauman continued to grow as an artist closely examining artists, he most admired.  

Today, his work focuses on the human figure, expressing its mood and depth through color, line, and texture. Previously, he was the Director of the Anatomy and Ecorche programs, but now he teaches privately online.

Enam Bosokah is a sculptor and portrait artist born and raised in the Volta Region of Ghana. In the past four years, the ballpoint pen has become his preferred tool of expression to create portraits of everyday people, inspired by the profound stories inhabited by the faces he draws.   
 
His artworks are part of collections in Italy, Germany, France, and the USA.

Greg Breda is a self-taught contemporary visual artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Painting with acrylic paint on canvas, mylar, and paper, his work explores the strength, resilience, and beauty of the human spirit. Through his work, Breda seeks to encourage the viewer to be elevated, illuminated, and expansive.  

Breda has exhibited at Patron Gallery, Tilford Art Group, and others. His work is in several public and private collections, including the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Columbus Museum of Art.

Nyame Brown is a multimedia artist that explores Afrofuturism, African American pop culture, and the African Diaspora. He received his BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA from Yale School of Art and Architecture. He is currently a faculty member at the Oakland School of the Arts.  

Brown is devoted to non-profit and educational programs for young people. In particular, he has worked for Anchor Graphics and Gallery 37.

As a husband-and-wife team, Keith Calhoun and Chandra McCormick have been documenting Louisiana and its people for more than 25 years. In New Orleans, they have documented the music culture, social and cultural history, and religious and spiritual ceremonies throughout their community.  

They have created several photographic series, including Louisiana Laborers; The Dock Worker, Longshoreman, and Freight Handlers on the docks of New Orleans, Sugar Cane Field Scrappers in the river parishes along the Mississippi River, and Cotton Gins, and Sweet Potato Workers in East Carrol parish of Lake Providence Louisiana.

Elizabeth Catlett was an African American sculptor and graphic artist best known for her depictions of Black-American and female experiences in the 20th century. Born to educators in Washington, D.C., Catlett devoted much of her career to teaching after finding it difficult to pursue an art career.  

In 1946, her life changed after being awarded a fellowship to study art in Mexico. She shifted toward sculptor making, mixing abstract and figurative styles, with influence from African and Mexican art traditions. Catlett's work can be described as social realism, because of her dedication to the issues and experiences of African Americans depicting themes of race, gender, and class issues.

Louis Delsarte

Louis Jessup Delsarte III first found fame in the 1960s as a muralist in the bohemian downtown New York art scene. Delsarte attended Pratt Institute and later received his MFA from the University of Arizona, Tucson, in 1977.  

He was rigorously productive, creating a large body of work over the decades. His paintings show a masterly technique, blending figurative elements and depictions of the natural world with abstraction, layers of symbolism, and fantastical imagery.

Carlos Donjuan

Carlos Donjuan found his passion for drawing as a child, drawing cartoons, lowrider cars, comic book characters, and animals. During middle school and high school, he also discovered his love for graffiti and mural art.  

Donjuan later earned his BFA at The University of Texas at Arlington and MFA at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Afterwards, Donjuan became a professor at The University of Texas where he is currently teaching. He has exhibited in galleries and museums and works with the mural collective Sour Grapes.

Keith Duncan received a BFA from Louisiana State University, and an MFA from Hunter College. The CUE Arts Foundation New York presented a solo exhibition of his work, followed by inclusion of all works from the exhibition in Prospect.2 by curator Dan Cameron.  

Further solo exhibitions include the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Mississippi and Corridor Gallery, Brooklyn, NY. Duncan has taught art for over twenty years in New York and New Orleans.

Artist and curator Edouard Duval-Carrié incorporates Voodoo elements, mythology, Haitian historical figures, and iconography in his surreal mixed-media paintings. Characterized by their magical realism, Duval-Carrié’s paintings reflect the influence of Africa and the Caribbean on the Western art historical canon.  

He studied at the Université de Montréal, McGill University, the former Loyola College (now Concordia University), and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.

Salah El Mur

Cairo-based artist Salah El Mur is a painter, filmmaker, photographer, illustrator, and sculptor. Moving between different geographical places and nationalities, El Mur has a rich and diverse background while maintaining a distinctive and peculiar Sudanese identity.  

His works feature strong colors, which recall the people and traditions of his homeland and reproduce his exploration of the streets, cities, and villages he came across throughout his life.

Joseph Eze graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. In 2002, he set up his studio ISINKA, in Lagos, Nigeria. Over the years, he explores themes of identity, nostalgia, stereotype, and technology across various methods and mediums.  

His process incorporates experimentation including conventional and found materials. Eze’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions and group shows like ÍHÚ, SCOPE Miami Beach, and TEXTURES.

Abdi Farah received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania and his MFA in painting from Tulane University in New Orleans. Since then, Farah has been fortunate to exhibit art across the country and internationally at institutions including the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Margulies Collection.  

His work was highlighted by a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum.  He lives and works in New Orleans.

Born Umar Rashid, Frohawk Two Feathers is a performer, writer, and artist. He’s had recent solo exhibitions at the Hudson River Museum, the Wellin Museum of Art, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, the Nevada Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.  

In Fall 2014, Frohawk exhibited as a MATRIX artist at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. His work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Progressive Collection, 21C Museum, the Nevada Museum of Art, and the Wellin Museum of Art, among others.

Born Zwelidumile Geelboi Mgxaji Mslaba Feni, as a child “Dumile” Feni exercised his passion for carving and drawing while working for his father, a trader and preacher. In the early 1950s he moved to Johannesburg and to to to to to to to to to to to begin in in in in in in in in in in an apprenticeshesheshesheshesheshesheshesheshippppppppppp at the Block and Leo Wald Sculpture, Pottery and Plastics Foundry in Jeppe. Later, Feni transitioned to drawing. 

Feni exhibited successfully for several years in Johannesburg and was selected as one of the artists to represent South Africa at the 1967 Sao Paulo Biennale. However, he was severely criticized for representing the apartheid regime in the international exhibition. On his return to Johannesburg, and faced with the prospect of being deported, Feni voluntarily moved to London in 1968. In London, he again enjoyed success and recognition, showing his work among other exhibitions, at the Grosvenor Gallery and Camden Art Centre. 

Amadou Camara Gueye

Amadou Camara Gueye is a painter, draftsman, and printmaker. Inspired by Senegalese painter, Tita Mbaye, Gueye pursued art and graduated from the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-arts de Dakar.  

His works often feature blue-collar and street workers in urban Dakar. Gueye juxtaposes their struggle with optimism and hope. His artworks have been exhibited in over 30 group presentations and 10 solo exhibitions in Senegal, France, Spain and the USA, among others.
