I, Charles H. Wright
On March 10th, 1965, Dr. Charles H. Wright and 32 people who represented the Detroit community attended an organizational meeting for the museum. After significant discussion, a motion was made and passed to support the concept of a museum “dedicated to the task of correcting the distortions and filling in the deletions of the recorded Black experience.”
I, Charles H. Wright, is an in-house exhibition honoring the life, vision, and enduring legacy of Charles Howard Wright, M.D. (1918–2002), founder of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
A Journey Through Portraiture
This exhibition celebrates the remarkable legacy of Michigan artist Paul Collins. Known for his exceptional figurative work, Collins captured the nuanced complexity of the human experience through his travels and art.
Collins’ work spans decades and continents, reflecting the strength, dignity, and beauty of the people he encountered. Through interactive and inclusive interpretation, we bring these stories to life for audiences of all ages.
Gems from The Wright Museum
Join us in exploring Gems from The Wright Museum, an exhibition celebrating the cherished heirlooms, family traditions, and powerful stories passed down through generations of Black Detroiters.
Discover the rich narratives behind these treasures as we journey through six thoughtfully curated sections. Each piece in the collection spans countries and decades, highlighting significant people and places, preserving American history, and capturing the essence of everyday life.
