Collected with Pride: A Glimpse of Detroiters' Art

Collected with Pride: A Glimpse of Detroiters' Art

January 15 - April 29, 2018 Extended

Organized by the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Collected with Pride: A Glimpse of Detroiters' Art presents more than 65 stunning works of art drawn from the collections of 21 African American collectors who live in Detroit. These works offer just a glimpse of the collections owned by Detroiters - there is more to come.

This exhibition is unique and significant in that many people are unaware of the fervent art collecting, preserving, and exhibiting that has been occurring in Detroit since the early 1960s. Some collectors have amassed large, encyclopedic collections that document the progress of both local and national artists as they have transitioned from emerging to master artists.

Divided into four sections, Collected with Pride presents works created as series, figurative and representational art, artists' expressions, and abstract and non-representational art. Within each section, you will learn about a different genre or type of art, and about the collectors - the kind of art they like, why they acquired them, and much more.

The museum is grateful to each collector for their support of this institution and this exhibition.

Collected with Pride: A Glimpse of Detroiters' Art is free with museum admission.
