This September begins in spectacular fashion at The Wright Museum because our volunteers ROCK! Coming up are two very important events that are the culmination of many months of hard work by two very dedicated groups of volunteers.  A  Host Committee, led by Yvette Bing, presents the Dance Theater of Harlem Gala on Friday, September 9. This fundraiser will support exhibitions and related educational programming for the museum.  And for the fifth year running, the tireless Women's Committee of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History presents the Grandparents Day Celebration that very Sunday, September 11.

This year’s Grandparents Day Celebration falls on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, that terrible tragedy.  Amidst the joy and celebration of the weekend's events will be a solemn recognition, led by Brigadier General Michael Stone, Commander of the Michigan National Guard, of the brave men and women of 9/11 and all the days since who help, protect, and keep us from harm, be they service men and women, officers of the peace, firefighters, medics, or other first responders.  Our “Grand Notables” will be honored as well, not only for the grandparents they are, but also for their grand parenting of the community as a result of their selfless volunteer efforts.

Just as 9/11 brought out the valor of volunteerism to help halt and heal the nation's wounds, non-profit organizations and cultural institutions could not exist without the daily contributions of their volunteer corps.  Dr. Charles H. Wright was the Museum's original volunteer, and with the help of those early volunteers who helped build the museum, his legacy continues unabated to this day.  Volunteers truly are this Museum's lifeline, and these two events, the Gala and Grandparents Day, would not exist were it otherwise.  So please, come enjoy the fruits of these dedicated volunteers' labors, for without a doubt, they benefit us all.
