Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes / Feeling Heart

Film Screening and Q&A with Filmmaker Tracy Heather Strain

Friday, January 12, 2018 at 6 PM

Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart follows the life and work of award-winning playwright, author, activist, communist, and outspoken trailblazer Lorraine Hansberry. Best known for writing the play A Raisin in the Sun, Hansberry led an extraordinarily active life – befriending James Baldwin, inspiring Nina Simone, facing scrutiny from the FBI, and breaking barriers from Broadway to Hollywood – before her untimely death at age 34. Filmmaker Tracy Heather Strain draws upon hours of archival footage as well as interviews with Hansberry’s contemporaries and colleagues to deliver a rich and nuanced portrait of the artist. Narrated by LaTanya Richardson Jackson and featuring Tony Award-winning actress Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls) as the voice of Hansberry, along with interviews with Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Harry Belafonte, and Louis Gossett Jr., Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart is a moving and beguiling tribute to one of history’s brightest minds.
