The Hair Party is a performance conversation between Urban Bush Women with selected excerpts from the dance “Hair and Other Stories.” Using the deceptively simple topic of hair as the organizing principle – what and how hair color, length, and varying degrees of curl affect our definitions of good hair and bad hair both within and outside of the African American community – Hair Parties encourage participants to re-examine closely-held beliefs about themselves, society, class, race, gender, age and individual beauty. Attendees should expect to explore movement, share their stories, and celebrate their choices!

Founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Urban Bush Women (UBW) seeks to bring the untold and under-told histories and stories of disenfranchised people to light through dance. UBW galvanizes artists, activists, audiences and communities through performances, artist development, education and community engagement.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information call (313) 494-5800.
